OK, I seem to have a problem with aircooled VW's.
I'm finding myself buying all the vehicles I never dreamed I would actually own.
    Here is my latest purchase:

    A 1967 HIGHROOF AMBULANCE

Always wanted one since the first ever time I saw one at a show a few years ago now.
These are pretty rare, this perticular one is quite special due to the factory fitted windows, the rear ones on each side are pop outs.
It needs a bit of work but for the stupidly cheap price I paid it will never owe my money.

Anyway, talk is cheap. here are the pics.......

    Update time!

Got to work drilling out all the hundreds of tiny spot welds that hold in the inner skins - what a boring job!
Plan is to remove these carefully and eventually cover them and replace as the interior gets done. Makes sense as they are already the right shape and size - think i might screw them on when they are replaced tho - with some nice caps to finish the screws.

Its also being done to reveal any hidden issues....

Also flapped back the front to find out why the bottom half sounds so fillery when you tap it...

Turns out it was a shoddy repair full-o-filler.....

And don't forget to wear those safety specs people, spent yesterday in A&E getting metal removed from both eyes, plus a nice trip to the eye specialists on monday.
I'm thinking orange might be my colour........

Great to see some work being done on the ambulance. Damn that pic of your eyes I'm guessing full of some iodine wash looks bad. I bet they were super sore!!! I think that the four small square indentations on the floor were something to do with a removeable chair or support to sit in to stop them moving around when the ambulance was moving. The stretchers were loaded in from the rear. some of them used to have a chair that sat at a 45 degree angle to the onloaded stretcher facing forwards. Some also used to have space for a second removable chair with wheels on it to sit facing outwards towards the sliding side door, these slid into the ambulance on guide rails. (See below)

No worries mate. I reckon you should send an e-mail to the split screen van club or the VW museum in Wolfsberg. I bet they've got all sorts of information and pictures they could send you. (I pulled that picture off the internet yesterday afternoon when I was working from home). I'll see what else I can come up with??? The first conversions were done in 1951. The rear hatch has the additional hinges to aid the loading and unloading of stretchers. They were the first buses to have a shortened engine lid, (which became standard on all Vans in 1955), this allowed a larger windowless tailgate for the stretchers to be loaded from the rear. The conversion on your bus will have either been done by Westphalia (spelt 'Westfalia' in this country) or Clinomobil as they were the only two companies commissioned to build 'high top' ambulances.

I thought you'd like this image from the original VW ambulance brochure, it clearly shows how they are supposed to be laid out inside, (although this image isn't of a high top). The lay out of the high top ambulance should be the same, they were simply used to give the paramedics more headroom to treat the patients whilst on route to the hospital. Hope this helps.

Well having that amount of money sat in my garage is just too much of a tease.
Split will always be my favorite tbh, so something had to give.
The sale of the oval would mean i can clear my split debt and free up a couple of hundred pounds every month for panels and bits etc.

I'm trying to sort something out so a mate can own it, but as always with these things - the first one with cash in my hands wins lol

Super cool - love the original photos. It's great when you watch an old movie from the 60's and 70's as there are usually loads of Beetles, Campers, Type 3's knocking about in the background. I watched Dirty Harry a couple of weeks ago and loved all the old VW's.

Right, now got a workshop sorted so the floor can come up and the welding can begin in vain. All the glass is now out and tbh, the window seal lips look a hell of a lot better than expected. Minor repairs to the cargo door window frames and a little bit around one of the driving windows. Very happy chap.
