1979 Florida Blue MK1 Golf Empty 1979 Florida Blue MK1 Golf

Post by LacrOne Wed Dec 30, 2009 9:11 am

    Hello everyone,
I have decided to put my new build thread here as i appreciate the comments of the users of this site a lot more than the local ones down here in Norwich.
My latest acquisition is a 1979 Florida blau mk1 golf.
It a low spec model so comes complete with small back interior, single drivers side mirror and a single pod dash.

So far the 1L engine has been removed and most of the harness pulled back.
The car is solid and an absolute steal at £400.
The plans are to fit a clean slightly detailed polo gt engine in as this wont require any engine mount mods on the chassis legs.
The polo donor car has been stripped and the engine is sat on a stand at a mates barn ready to be rebuilt.
the engine harness is to be routed through the inner wing and will be extended so it routes nicely under the gearbox and chassis leg to hide it away.

I'm leaving the og paint on the car and will be running a miss match genuine passenger wing and boot lid in dark blue as these are the only areas that had a bit of rust.
I will be ressurecting the 13x9 slotmags from the matt black loon - if any of you can remember that!

basically its gonna be slammed - a bit ratty looking with a nice detailed engine bay.
The idea is to eventually fit a G40, but there is plenty of time for that.

Anyhoo, enough chatter, here are some pics of the slam panel taking shape.
    Cheers

    More to follow
Plan is to have it done in plenty of time to drive out to Bugspain again in 2010. this year saw the first Bugspain and i can say truthfully that it was an amazing roadtrip and well worth the drive.

Oh yeah, next tuesday (5th Jan) i take delivery of a 1972 type 3 varient squareback!, thats will look lovely next to my '65 beetle haha
    cheers

Looks like a great buy and in one of my favourite Mk1 colours too. You've got to post up pics of your Type 3 Variant when you pick it up as I love them. A friend of mine had one in Texas yellow just after I passed my driving test with mint black vinyl interior and polished Porsche 356 steelies with Porsche nipple hub caps. Great car.

Cool project 1979 Florida Blue MK1 Golf Icon_biggrin

What gearbox are you using??? GT box won't be fun if your running little tyres..... 8P or 8N code box would be better

What fusebox are you using??? When I was looking at building a Polo GT engined mk1 Golf, I worked out the easiest way was to use the engine loom & fusebox from a Polo mk3 GT...... dash loom from a mk2 Polo..... the original rear interior loom ..... & splice in the feeds for the lift & pressure pumps....... possibly even fit a cut off switch for safety/security on the pump feeds

I seem to remember the whole lift pump & fuel level assembly from the Polo fits straight into the Golf tank..... the rod for the float will need bending to get the gauge to read right though

If I remember any more useful info I'll tell you 1979 Florida Blue MK1 Golf Icon_wink

    cheers paul,
I'l be using one of the facet fuel pumps and a friend of mine who works for a company who make formula 1 wiring harnesses seems to think he can run the ecu by splicing as few as 3 wires into the original golf fuse box.

My original plan was to run the golf fuse box side by side with the polo one and link them. Engine loom will be from the polo obviously but all the rest i'm planning to keep golf.

Still, nothing in set in stone yet and i'm very much into any hints tips and advice you may have. I remember you answered my questions on the driveshafts on mk1oc.

    cheers

Those photos of Bugspain are awesome. Love that buggy and the razer edge Karman Ghia and low rider push bike are cool too. How did you find out about Bugspain and plan the trip?

My friend was raised in spain from the age of 4 till 16 so he speaks all the languages and is friendly with a club called panscrapers.
I'd definitely recommend checking out the panscrapers website!
