bought the golf a few years ago, my second car after a starlet thought about getting a mk1 fiesta but this one came up at the right time and i immediatly fell in love with it
sorry for poor quality pics, all done on my phone!
didn't really change much for the first year except the front indicators. it was a 1.1 but was very nippy considering the engine wasn't the healthiest and drank oil! so an engine change was on the cards i did a compression test which showed that cylinders 2 and 3 were blowing through but the engine carried on regardless until i decided to pull it out about 6 months later!
stripped out old engine whilst in my final year at uni, very bad idea, no money no time!
so she ended up standing looking abandoned for a while, only getting attention from scrap collectors!
originally i was going to put a 1.6 gti 8v in that a friend had given me but a 16v kr came up cheap so had to get it, had a lovely 80's paint scheme too!
the 1.6 ended up in a mates mk2 after his engine decided to do this
engine in
got it running but the webers needed tuning. he took it to a local garage who did them and it ran much better then the very same day a focus drove into the back of him and wrote it off gutted doesn't describe it! the best thing was the drivers responce quote;
"oh my god i can't believe it, i haven't had a crash in two years" had to laugh!
in mean time stripped the kr
started to paint it back up
as it sits now
decided to strip head to replace head gasket just in case, was a good job too!
stripped the head
cleaned all the valves
then got a fresh skim and rebuilt replaced the oil seals, guides seemed ok
had a problem when reinstalling the cams, one of the studs used to located the cam bearing caps decided to strip the ali, not too pleased at all hopefully will have it sorted soon.
the bodywork needed some welding most of which is now done, a bad repair to the bulkhead where the clutch cable comes through left me with this!
i'm learning to weld so am hoping this will hold!
also removed rain tray and battery tray
did some filling and primed the bay
then lacquered
played about with my new oil cooler
view from my front window a constant reminder to get some work done!
collected most of the parts, still need an exhaust system just need to pull my finger out! REALLY want to be driving for the summer!
hope i havn't sent you to sleep if anyone wants to lend a hand round leeds way
will try and keep this updated as i go along, cheers for looking any comment appreciated
