Cool, what width adapters are you using? I'm about to put Porsche rims on my MkII. Cheers

30mm adaptors. i had an issue with the rear adaptor bolts catching on the inside of the drums so i put a 5mm spacer between the adaptor and hub. not ideal but theyre on and theres no more catching

Re: mk2 golf - banded steelies update
i haven't updated in a while but there isn't really much to update.. the porsche 928 alloys have gone away and i managed to get a set of black steelies with tyres for a bargain price
i dug out my old centre caps, sanded them down, sprayed them white, then got my mate to put a black number 8 in the centre....

first problem i had was when i first fitted them. i have drums on the back and the adaptor bolts were catching on the inside of the drum so i had to buy 5mm spacers and put them between the hub and the adaptor.
drove fine for a few weeks then i had a knocking noise on the front. this could have just been wear and tear but i needed a new cv boot sleeve and bottom ball joint
to save the garage some time, i put 2 steelies on the front so they could take them off and put them on easier. put the porsche wheels back on, and straight away i got a knocking noise when i first set off and when i changed into 2nd. took it to a garage and they couldn't find where it was coming from so i just left it
and both front wheel bearings are nackerd
easy enough stuff to do if your mechanically knowledged and have somewhere to do it

Re: mk2 golf - banded steelies update
i can change stuff like that, you reckon the extra levarage killed the bearings? but the if it all ends up at the same offset then theyre should be no difference? i dunno

Re: mk2 golf - banded steelies update
my local garage told me that anything thats not fitted straight onto the hub because of adaptors/spacers then it will wreck the wheel bearings. im not sure why

Re: mk2 golf - banded steelies update
usually the size difference in what the car was intended for and what the car runs makes a difference- i had 17s on my old astra, the astra was designed to have 14inch steel and it ate bearings for breakfast, as did my escort on 17s.
im hoping the 18s on the mk4 wont give me the same prob, as you can get them with 17s as standard and the annis have 18s so it shouldnt be too bad. i think you would have to have extremely good adaptors to eradicate all wobble, you think each stud needs to be 100% alligned to where it should be, a 0.00001 mm difference and your hub will girate ever so slightly wrongly and put unesesary strain on the bearing. i know adaptors are made using cnc machines etc and are bang on, but it only takes the slightest of difference to create something the car wont like. i decided agianst the porkers on the mk4 cuz i wud need 35mm adaptors and i knew getting them bang on and reliable as well as safe for everyday use would be unlikely unless i paid the very best engineering firm the very best money, i.e several hundreds as opposed to a hundred

spacers are nothing but problems, get wheels that fit the car, makes life so much easier.
